Prosom is a brand name drug for the generic medication called estazolam. This is a benzodiazepine drug that affects the brain’s chemicals in order to help them to become balanced so that the symptoms of insomnia can be minimized or eliminated. Prosom is a treatment for the symptoms of insomnia but is not a cure for the condition. It helps with struggles such as being able to fall asleep or being able to stay asleep.
Who Receives a Prosom Prescription
Prosom is prescribed to people suffering from insomnia, and who can’t seem to overcome it on their own. This is not meant for people suffering for severe insomnia, but for those who need additional assistance to be able to get the rest they need.
This is not meant for people who simply have a sleepless night on a rare occasion. However, when the sleeplessness is common enough that it is interfering with a person’s health and happiness, a prescription medication can make the difference.
Who Should Not Take Prosom?
This is a prescription drug that is not meant for individuals under the age of 18. It should also not be taken by anyone who is allergic to it or who is taking other benzodiazepine drugs. This medication should also not be used by people with certain medical conditions, who are pregnant or breastfeeding a baby, or who are taking certain other medications. This drug can cause interactions or contradictions with many other prescription and over the counter drugs or supplements.
What Should You Know with Your Prescription?
When you are prescribed Prosom, your doctor will give you instructions regarding the way that you should take it based on your condition, your medical history, and other considerations. These directions should be followed carefully in order to make sure that you are taking it both safely and effectively.
The prescription label should have the directions printed on it as a reminder as to how you should take these pills. If you do not understand the direction or if you have any questions, ask your doctor or a pharmacist before you take the medication. It’s very important to have a solid understanding of how to use this pill before you take it. The reason is that using it wrong can place you at an increased risk of a number of health problems, including side effects.
What to Expect from Using this Prescription Sleeping Pill
This is a medication that will cause you to fall asleep and remain that way for several hours. Therefore, if you will not have 7 or 8 hours that you can dedicate only to sleep, then you should not take Prosom, as you will not be able to become alert and active within that time.
It’s very important not to drive first thing in the morning until you have a very good idea of how this drug affects you. There is a chance that it will take some time to wake up and become alert in the morning.
Because of this, you may not be a safe driver because your reaction time and awareness may not yet have fully returned by the time you need to head into work. If you need to go somewhere on the morning after you’ve taken this medication, make sure you have alternate transportation arranged that will not place you behind the wheel.
What Happens if Prosom Doesn’t Work?
If you find that this drug does not work for you or if it starts to become less effective, contact your doctor as a different sleeplessness treatment may be necessary. That said, keep in mind that Prosom is designed only as a short-term sleep aid.
If you have used it for 7 to 10 nights contact your doctor before continuing its use any longer. This medication should not be taken for a period greater than 12 weeks unless you have been advised to do so by your doctor.
Precautions
Prosom can be a habit-forming drug. Therefore, if you have taken this medication for any length of time, you will likely want to speak with your doctor in order to learn how to gradually decrease the dosage until you can stop taking it completely. This will help to prevent unpleasant side effects.
Regardless of whether you’ve used Prosom properly, there is a risk of side effects. These can include the following:
- Insomnia
- Dizziness
- Hypokinesia
- Abnormal coordination
- Weakness
- Headache
- Malaise (overall not feeling good)
- Pain in the lower extremities
- Chest pain
- Back pain
- Indigestion
- Nausea
- Muscle stiffness
- Indigestion
- Confusion
- Dizziness
- Depression

Prosom will make you very drowsy the next day after taking it. I would not take it if you have be in tip top shape for work etc. I think this is a good one if you cannot sleep due to pain of injury becauase the effects do wear off after a few days. I would not recommend prosom for ongoing insomnia.
