Seconal is the brand name for the prescription sleep aid secobarbital. It is also recognized as Seconal Sodium.
What is Seconal?
This is a type of medication known as a barbiturate. It functions by slowing down the central nervous system – the nerves of the body and brain – in order to provide sedation before surgery, or as a short-term treatment for the symptoms of insomnia.
Cautions Before Using This Drug
Seconal is a powerful drug that is designed to help you to fall asleep, and as such, it also comes with the risk of certain other reactions. There have been cases where people have driven, eaten, or placed telephone calls but have no memory of these events later on.
Should this type of circumstance occur to you, it is important to stop taking this medication and contact your doctor so that he or she can suggest a more appropriate treatment for your sleeplessness.
Who Should Not Use Seconal?
If you have porphyria or if you have an allergy to Seconal (secobarbital) then you should not take this drug as it could be life threatening. Other conditions that may require adjustments in dosage or certain tests before this medication can be safely taken include:
- Liver disease
- Seizure disorders such as epilepsy
- Heart disease
- Anemia
- Breathing disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder or severe asthma
- Overactive thyroid
- A current diagnosis or history of mental illness, depression, or attempt of suicide
- A current diagnosis or history of alcohol or drug abuse or addiction
Seconal use can be habit forming and it is therefore very important that it be used only by the person who has received the medication. This can be a dangerous drug for an individual who has a history of drug or alcohol abuse.
How to Take This Medication
Take care to read the prescription label and thoroughly understand the way in which this drug should be taken. If you don’t remember how your doctor told you to take this medication or you don’t understand the directions on the bottle, call your doctor or your pharmacist to have him or her explain it to you. It is important to take Seconal properly in order to ensure that it will be both safe and effective.
Seconal should only be taken if you’re certain that you will have a minimum of 7 to 8 hours to dedicate to sleep before you will need to become active and alert again. Swallow this drug whole at bedtime with a full glass of water.
Closing Thoughts About Seconal
Though Seconal can be beneficial to many people in overcoming their struggle with insomnia, it is not considered to be a first-choice option for the treatment of that sleeplessness condition. It does have benefits that will assist people when other options were inadequate. That said, the number of side effects, the risk of addiction, the contraindications with other medications, the conflict with other medical conditions and the other issues surrounding this drug will mean that doctors will typically try other methods, drugs and strategies before prescribing this one.
US Availability
In this United States, Seconal is no longer available as either a brand name drug or in its generic form, secobarbital. Doctors in the United States will neither prescribe it nor recommend it. It is unknown why the production of this drug was discontinued in the United States. According to the FDA, this decision was not made due to any ruling they made, nor was it because the drug was determined to be unsafe.
Still, it is not recommended that anyone in the US attempt to purchase it elsewhere or order it from another country. This action is illegal and could place your health at high risk.
This is a very old sleep aid that has been around since the 1940’s. I don’t think they prescribe it much anymore because of risk of overdose and addiction. However, if you use it as directed, it is safe and it is the best sleep aid out there. It works wonders for putting you to sleep. Only downside is the dowsy-ness the next day and it can slur your speech.
I have been using this for a few months for my insomnia and it works like a charm and even helps with my anxiety. If you have tried other drugs and find that nothing works I would try Seconal it’s very effective.
I have insomina bad and this is a great medication. It is very strong, so it should not be used by first time users but if you have tried everything else weaker first then this is the one that will get you to sleep. Caution is needed though, it’s very stong and has a history of abuse.
I seem to suffer from insomnia at a level that concerns me enough to look into seconal and I believe it would do me wonders. With my personal relationships and also my outlook on life at age 57 soon to be 58. I have no idea where to go for such treatment, but certainly would appreciate any advice helping me do so. I do hope someone reads this who can help me with this insufferable insomnia. Any suggestions??? JO
I am going to ask my doctor about this. I have tried every medication and have only found them to be helpful for a night at best. At worst, they never help and it is a waste of medication and money. I am at my wits end and am sick of nobody taking this seriously. I can not have a good outlook on life when I am absolutely psyically drained and miserable. My eyes hurt from being awake constantly. I have had chronic, unrelenting insomnia for two years now. If nothing works soon, it seems that I am going to have to kill myself somehow.
